~ Severe Sulcus Thrush ~
QH Gelding - Trail Horse
This gelding came up lame in his right front hoof about 3 months ago. He had been wearing a set of shoes for around 4 months before hand & had been kept in muddy, wet conditions. His heels were contracted & he had developed sulcus thrush in all four hooves. The Right Front hoof was the most painful & severe. He walks with a limp, and is always putting the hoof forward while standing to relieve pressure on the heels. He also often 'points' this hoof, holding it up off of the ground. He acts like a typical "Navicular" horse.
This gelding has come to stay at our farm for the month to be treated. We will treat his hooves every day and post photos and improvements once a week.
Friday - June 25th 2010
We will be treating all of the geldings hooves twice a week in an antibacterial soak. We will pack the sulcus crevice with a 50/50 mixture of 1% clomitrozole & neosporin every day.
We will make sure that his hooves stay dry & give him daily hand walks on firm ground to stimulate healing, decontract his heels & encourage him to use his hoof normally. He will be kept out in a paddock to allow him to move about freely.
You can see how the heel bulbs have healed and continued to spread over time. The frog has become wider, thicker and much healthier over time. His limp has improved dramatically over the weeks that he has been here, but is still noticeable on hard or rocky ground. He continues to improve daily.
